Autonomous zones were created in rural areas during the centuries leading up to the Shturmovik Revolution as people began to disconnect themselves from the technocratic tsarist lifestyle and moved out of the cities to escape the meaningless existence of conservative decadence. After the Bobrovgrad Massacre, Shturmovik activists and militias began setting up autonomous zones within cities, a move that terrified loyalists of the Tsar. Most of the autonomous zones were semi or fully communist but they had the goal of uniting and establishing a global republic in the style of the Ancient Merikans. Autonomous zones are usually religious communes that adhere to the Shturmovik religion.
